A new dog does not need every product in a pet shop. Start with items that support safe care and a predictable routine, then adjust after you know the dog’s size, preferences and health. Buying more equipment cannot replace supervision or an appropriate daily plan.
Prepare the essentials
- Suitable food and stable food and water bowls.
- A comfortable washable resting place.
- Secure, well-fitted walking equipment and identification.
- A safe transport arrangement for the journey home and veterinary visits.
- Appropriate toilet supplies, waste bags and pet-safe cleaning products.
- Safe barriers for areas that cannot be supervised.
- A few size-appropriate toys and chews, introduced with supervision.
Confirm the current diet before making changes, and discuss feeding needs with your veterinarian when appropriate.
Inspect the home
Secure medicines, cleaners, rubbish, cables and small objects that could be swallowed. Check doors, balconies and fencing. Give the dog a retreat where children and visitors will not disturb them.
A pen or crate may help some households, but should provide comfort and be introduced positively. It is not a solution for leaving a distressed dog confined without support.
Wait on optional purchases
Specialized feeders, elaborate puzzles and grooming tools can wait until you know what the dog needs. Check sizing, cleaning and safe use before relying on any product. Avoid leaving unfamiliar toys or chews with an unsupervised dog.
Also prepare non-product essentials: a veterinary contact, emergency transport plan, household responsibilities and backup care. These are often more valuable on the first week than another accessory.
