Puppy Foundation Skills: Attention, Recall and a Release Cue

카메라를 바라보는 흰 강아지

Foundation training helps a puppy understand how to move with you, return when called and wait briefly before an activity begins. It should support daily life, not require the puppy to remain controlled every moment. Start with easy successes and protect rest and normal exploration.

Attention and name response

Say the puppy’s name once in a quiet setting. Mark and reward a voluntary glance toward you. Avoid repeating the name continuously or using it mainly before scolding. Practice a few repetitions, then allow a break.

Recall as a pleasant invitation

Begin a short distance away indoors. Use one cheerful cue, reward the approach and sometimes release the puppy back to an enjoyable activity. Do not call the puppy only to end play or do something unpleasant. Use secure management outdoors; a developing recall is not a replacement for a lead or fence.

Brief waiting and release

  1. Choose an easy position or quiet pause.
  2. Reward before the puppy moves away.
  3. Use a consistent release word to end the repetition.
  4. Increase duration, distance and distraction separately.

Do not make access to urgent toilet breaks, water or necessary meals depend on a difficult obedience test.

Move beyond visible food gradually

After a skill is understood, reduce the lure while continuing to reward. Vary rewards with suitable play, praise or access to exploration. Removing reinforcement abruptly can make learning less reliable.

If the puppy cannot respond, check distraction, fatigue, fear and health before increasing pressure. A useful foundation is clear communication that works in gradually harder settings, not instant compliance everywhere.
